ok for the first problem, make sure your ISP allows unauthenticated emails to be sent on port 25. What ISP do you have? I had this problem because SBC (US) bloks unauthenticated emails. I did found a way and the solution was send to maillist, check the archives of august. Also look in your maillog, most likely in /var/log directory to see what's really happening. If it says timed out... then most likely your ISP is blocking the port. anyway you should still call them and make sure. I have no clue for second problem.
