Highly depends. Personally I am not using a single product which uses a
forum, something I very much appreciate.

Always reply to the list unless there is a very good reason to contact
that person privately. Compare it with calling a work collegue at his
house to continue your office discussion from earlier that day - that
switch won't be appreciated generally.
