Hi Ron,
I have an auth server setup in the US and have about 55 hotspots in
Australia authenticating to it, so what you are suggesting is entirely
possible.

So long as the server is accessible from the open internet I don't see
it being an issue.
Presently I have 2 hotspots that sync to the same server which is not
local to those hotspots.
