Have you read the documentation on customizing the portal and the content 
manager?

You did the one thing you should never do, which is make large changes to the 
HTML.  I'm affraid we can't help you in that context.

You could do it all in the content manager if you hadn't modified the HTML.  
As for the second, it's exactly the way wifidog is designed NOT to work.
