Thank you.  The situation has been resolved with a switch to OpenWrt. No doubt in my mind it was the package version associated with the DD-Wrt distro image that caused the issue.

What gateway version is this?  Is this with the official ipkg distributed by 
the wifidog project?

Watch out for trailing spaces in the config file.

All the config documentation is in the comments of the gateway config file.
