Hi Ben,

I wrote this install tutorial a while ago for Debian. It shouldn't
have changed much for Ubuntu

http://dev.wifidog.org/wiki/doc/install/debian

If you're still having problems, try running:

sudo apt-get install build-essential

This should install the packages needed to build the gateway
