Île Sans Fil, CHOQ.FM et CUTV lance HAL: Connecter Montréal à ses artistes

Montréal, le 25 septembre 2006. – Île Sans Fil (ISF), en partenariat
avec CHOQ.FM et CUTV, lance un tout nouveau service qui promet de
changer la manière dont les Montréalais interagissent avec leurs
artistes locaux. Le projet HAL (Hub des Artistes Locaux), une toute
nouvelle technologie multimédia, a pour visée première de distribuer du
contenu culturel et artistique local à travers les cafés, les
restaurants et les parcs de la grande métropole.

Première internationale, HAL encourage les Montréalais à découvrir leurs
artistes et producteurs locaux par l'entremise de juke-boxes sans-fil,
capables de diffuser du contenu audio et vidéo à haute résolution.
Notamment, HAL permet une riche diffusion médiatique, basée sur un
concept géographique - un contenu culturel unique est rendu disponible à
des endroits spécifiques.

Utiliser HAL dans l'un des hotspots d'Ile Sans Fil n'a rien de plus
simple : il suffit de démarrer le logiciel iTunes (disponible pour
Windows et Mac) et de cliquer sur le lien HAL qui apparaîtra au même
instant. À ce jour, 12 hotspots d'ISF sont munis de la technologie HAL
et un treizième sera rendu disponible d'ici la fin du mois de décembre
prochain.

Le projet HAL promeut le mandat d'Île Sans Fil, soit l'autonomisation
des communautés locales de Montréal, à travers la création et
l'implantation d'une technologie basée sur la communauté. HAL est le
troisième projet à grande échelle d'ISF, qui implique le développement
et le déploiement d'une nouvelle plate-forme médiatique. ISF, CHOQ.FM et
CUTV sont emballés de collaborer au développement de ce projet culturel
et technologique, encourageant ainsi la participation de la communauté
citoyenne de Montréal à la culture locale.

Tout comme les autres projets d'ISF, l'ensemble de la technologie et des
connaissances développées par l'entremise de HAL seront partagées
publiquement afin d'encourager son adoption par d'autres communautés.

Le projet HAL est en partie supporté par le Département du Patrimoine
Canadien et par le Conseil des Arts du Canada, avec la collaboration de
Terminus1525, la communauté artistique canadienne en ligne.

Île Sans Fil est une organisation à but non-lucratif, bilingue, qui
développe, déploie et maintient une technologie sans-fil orientée vers
la communauté et basée à Montréal. Avec un réseau sans fil gratuit de
105 hotspots et environ 24 000 usagers, ISF est un leader mondial dans
le domaine des réseaux sans-fil communautaires. ISF a déjà développé un
projet de logiciel libre appelé WifiDog? et a été une source
d'inspiration notoire au développement d'initiatives semblables à
Toronto, Ottawa/Gatineau et Québec.

CHOQ.FM est la radio Internet des étudiantes et étudiants de l'UQAM et
jouit de la collaboration de plus de 250 bénévoles et d'une
programmation d'une soixantaine d'émissions (www.choq.fm).

Concordia University Television (CUTV) est la plus ancienne des
télévisions étudiantes canadiennes. Elle propose une programmation
régulière présentant les œuvres de producteurs résidants, comprenant des
récits de fiction, des documentaires, des œuvres expérimentales, des
nouvelles, et plus encore.

Le lancement officiel du projet HAL aura lieu à la Sala Rossa, le 9
octobre prochain, dans le cadre de l'événement CUTV's Kickass Kickoff.
Lors de cette soirée, aura lieu une présentation de deux courts-métrages
produits par des étudiants, suivi d'un party tout en musique, avec une
prestation de Montreal Afro-beat orchestra GogoJungle?.

Ile Sans Fil, CHOQ.FM and CUTV Launch HAL: Connecting Montreal to its
Artists

Montreal, QC. September 23, 2006 – Ile Sans Fil with partners CHOQ.FM
and CUTV are launching an exciting new service that promises to change
the way Montrealers interact with local artists. Dubbed HAL (Hub des
Artistes Locaux), the technology will distribute artistic content
throughout Montreal cafés, restaurants, and parks via Ile Sans Fil's
extensive wireless network.

An international first, HAL encourages Montrealers to discover local
artists and media producers via wireless jukeboxes capable of streaming
high-resolution video and audio. Notably, it allows for rich media
dissemination on a geo-locative basis (unique content relevant to
individual hotspots).

Using HAL at an Ile Sans Fil hotspot is as easy as starting iTunes
(available for Windows and Mac), and clicking on the HAL logo. There are
currently 12 HALs at ISF hotspots, with another 13 on the way for December.

The project is partially supported by the Department of Canadian
Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts, along with the
collaboration of the Terminus1525 online art studio.

The HAL project furthers Ile Sans Fil's mandate of empowering Montreal
communities through the creation and deployment of community-centric
technology. It is ISF's third large-scale project involving proactively
developing and deploying new media platforms to take advantage of new
technologies. ISF, CHOQ.fm and CUTV are excited to work together
bringing this "bottom-up" cultural and technological project encouraging
local participation in culture to Montreal.

As with ISF's other projects, all technology and knowledge developed
will be shared publicly in open-source manner to encourage adoption by
other communities.

Ile Sans Fil is a bilingual volunteer-run non-profit organization that
develops, deploys and maintains Montreal based community-oriented
wireless technology. With a free wireless network of 105 hotspots and
24,000 users, ISF is a world-leader in the field of community wireless
networking. ISF has already developed the open-source software project
WifiDog? and has inspired similar grassroots initiatives in Toronto,
Ottawa/Gatineau and Quebec City.

CHOQ.FM is UQAM's student-run net-radio station, and has 250 volunteers
involved in 80 radio shows.

Concordia University Television (CUTV) is Canada's oldest student-run
television station and offers regular programming by our resident
producers, including fiction narrative, documentary, experimental, news
and everything in between.

HAL will be launched at the Sala Rossa on Oct. 9 as part of CUTV's
Kickass Kickoff. The evening will consist of two screenings of
student-produced short film, with drinks and dancing to follow with
music provided by Montreal Afro-beat orchestra GogoJungle?.
